In a major crackdown under Operation Lafiya Nakowa, troops of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army in joint operations with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested two impostors posing as policemen while attempting to ferry two Hilux vehicles packed with cannabis through Taraba State.
The dramatic arrest took place at Takum Junction in Wukari Local Government Area, following credible intelligence. The suspects, dressed in mobile police uniforms, were intercepted while heading toward Adamawa State.
According to military sources, one of the suspects was identified as Monday George, a 71-year-old dismissed Police ASP, and the other as 41-year-old Ezeugo Destiny Uche. Shockingly, both men had no ties to the Nigeria Police Force. The second Hilux was abandoned after its occupants bolted upon sighting troops.
“A total of 1,134 blocks of cannabis were recovered from the vehicles. The exhibits and suspects have since been handed over to NDLEA in Wukari for further investigation and prosecution,” an Army statement confirmed.
Commander of the 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, hailed the operation as a strong warning to drug traffickers and criminals operating in the region.
“This breakthrough is another testament to the synergy between the Nigerian Army and NDLEA. Taraba will not be a safe haven for criminals or drug syndicates,” he declared.
General Uwa also appealed to residents to keep supporting the security agencies.
“We urge the public to continue providing timely and credible information. Together, we will keep criminal elements on the run,” he assured.
The arrests underscore the intensity of Operation Lafiya Nakowa as security forces tighten the noose on drug cartels and criminal gangs across Taraba and the North East.
