When Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun assumed office as Nigeria’s 22nd Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023, he pledged to reposition the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) into a modern, intelligence-driven institution that could meet the nation’s growing security challenges.
Barely two years into his tenure, his administration has recorded notable strides that cut across crime reduction, welfare reforms, infrastructure renewal, and international cooperation.
Intelligence-Led Policing and Crime Suppression
Egbetokun introduced a decisive shift away from reactive policing, adopting intelligence-led strategies that prioritize prevention and swift response.
Through the deployment of situation rooms, tactical squads, and proactive operations, the Force significantly curtailed armed robbery, kidnapping, and rural banditry across various states.
The results of this strategy have been evident.
Within his first year, police operations led to over 35,000 arrests nationwide, including 1,907 kidnap suspects.
The Force recovered 2,750 firearms, 22,569 rounds of ammunition, and more than 1,540 stolen vehicles. In addition, more than 1,581 kidnapped victims were rescued, while 29,052 suspects were prosecuted, resulting in 16,200 convictions.
Creation of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS)
One of his most impactful innovations was the establishment of the Special Intervention Squad, a rapid-response unit deployed across multiple states. In the Federal Capital Territory alone, the SIS arrested 139 kidnappers and armed robbers, rescued 154 victims, and neutralized notorious bandit leaders terrorizing the Abuja–Kaduna expressway.
Infrastructure Modernization
Under Egbetokun, the police expanded their operational and training capacity.
Landmark projects include the commissioning of the Nigerian Police Resource Centre in Abuja, the National Cybercrime Centre, the Force Intelligence Building, and specialized schools for public relations and intelligence.
The acquisition of drones, Armoured Personnel Carriers, gun trucks, and new vehicles further enhanced police response capabilities.
Welfare and Family Support Initiatives
Recognizing the sacrifices of officers, Egbetokun rolled out significant welfare interventions.
Families of fallen officers received ₦9.85 billion under the Group Life Assurance Scheme.
He also launched the IGP Family Welfare Scheme, oversaw merit-based promotions for 33,867 officers, and institutionalized April 7 as National Police Day to honour the Force.
To boost morale, he introduced a transparent and merit-based promotion system, while establishing annual awards such as the Police Officer of the Year. Awardees’ portraits are now displayed at Force Headquarters and across commands, reinforcing the value of professionalism and service excellence.
Egbetokun has also taken a strong stand against corruption, particularly in the sensitive area of recruitment.
His exposure of irregularities in the Police Service Commission’s recruitment process signalled a renewed drive for transparency, integrity, and accountability within the Force.
The digital transformation of the police has accelerated under his watch. Initiatives include the rollout of e-reporting and e-warrant systems, the digitization of the Central Criminal Registry, and the introduction of digital IDs for officers.
He has also prioritized cybercrime training, including sending officers abroad for capacity building, while working toward the establishment of a national sex offender registry and renewable energy-powered formations.
Strengthening Partnerships
Internationally, Egbetokun expanded Nigeria’s cooperation with INTERPOL and the International Law Enforcement Academy, unlocking fresh opportunities for training and joint operations.
Locally, he deepened community policing through grassroots committees, building trust and enhancing threat detection in neighbourhoods.
His leadership has not gone unnoticed, as Egbetokun has been honoured nationally and at community levels, receiving the Silent Heroes Award for combating robbery and kidnapping, and the Yewa Special Award in recognition of his service and community engagement.
With these milestones, analysts believe that IGP Egbetokun has laid a strong foundation for a more modern, accountable, and responsive police force, though the challenge remains to sustain these gains amid Nigeria’s evolving security landscape.
