The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Tuesday reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to international collaboration in the fight against transnational crime, especially cybercrime.
Egbetokun made this known during a courtesy visit by Lord David George Hanson, the UK Minister of the Home Office, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
According to a statement by Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the visit focused on strengthening bilateral ties and reinforcing ongoing efforts between the UK and Nigeria to curb cyber fraud and other transnational crimes.
Lord Hanson highlighted the growing threat of cross-border crime, describing it as a major concern for both nations.
He praised the existing cooperation between the UK government and the Nigeria Police Force and expressed optimism about deeper collaboration.
He also hinted at plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that would further cement their partnership and outline a clearer framework for future engagements.
In response, the IGP welcomed the proposed MoU and commended the UK’s continued support. He noted that the visit was a testament to the mutual commitment of both countries to global security.
Egbetokun also proposed the establishment of a fellowship exchange program with the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), aimed at enhancing knowledge-sharing and boosting operational synergy.
The police chief reaffirmed the NPF’s readiness to work with both local and international bodies to reduce crime to the barest minimum through stronger partnerships and shared intelligence.
