The Coalition of Digital Press Association and the Young Nigerian Rights Organization (YNRO), led by Comrade Victor Ojei (Wong Box Nigeria), has strongly condemned the continued detention and prosecution of writer and socio-political activist Fejiro Oliver under the Cybercrime Act.
Fejiro Oliver, a vocal new media critic, faces charges over Facebook posts critical of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Senator Ede Dafinone. The coalition described this as a gross misuse of Section 24 of the Cybercrime Act — a move that violates press freedom and contradicts the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended).
Quoting relevant judicial precedents, the coalition noted that Nigerian courts have consistently ruled against the use of the Cybercrime Act to suppress free expression, citing landmark decisions such as Okedara v. AGF (2018), Sowore v. FGN (2019), and Media Rights Agenda v. Nigeria (2024), among others.
In his remarks, Comrade Victor Ojei reaffirmed the group’s commitment to defending the rights of journalists and citizens alike.
“Journalism is not a crime. Speaking truth to power is not cyberstalking,” he declared.
“This is not just about Fejiro Oliver; it is about every Nigerian’s right to speak truth to power,” he added.
The coalition called on authorities to immediately release Fejiro Oliver and end the misuse of the Cybercrime Act against the press.
