As the world marks World Press Freedom Day, the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Monday Okpebholo, has paid glowing tribute to journalists in Edo State and beyond, hailing their vital contributions to democracy, public accountability, and societal development.

In a statement issued by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Okpebholo described a free and independent press as a foundational pillar of any democratic society. He emphasized that his administration is deeply committed to safeguarding press freedom and creating an environment where journalists can thrive without fear of intimidation or interference.

“Journalists are the voice of the voiceless and the guardians of public interest,” Governor Okpebholo said. “Their commitment to truth, fairness, and ethical reporting strengthens public trust and underpins the democratic process.”

He praised the courage of journalists who continue to report under difficult conditions, both within and outside Nigeria, and reaffirmed his government’s support for the constitutional rights that protect freedom of expression and the press.

While recognizing the growing challenges posed by misinformation and disinformation in the digital age, Governor Okpebholo urged media professionals to uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in their work.

The governor also expressed appreciation for the partnership between the state government and the media, noting that constructive journalism plays a key role in policy scrutiny, amplifying citizen voices, and promoting transparency.

“As we celebrate World Press Freedom Day, my administration remains open to meaningful engagement with the media in our shared mission to build a better Edo State,” he added.
