The United Kingdom’s Minister of State for Defence, Lord Baron Vernon Rodney Coaker, has pledged his country’s continued support for the Armed Forces of Nigeria during an official visit to the Defence Headquarters in Abuja. The visit marks Lord Coaker’s first international engagement since assuming office, underscoring the strategic importance of Nigeria-UK relations.
Speaking during the visit, Lord Coaker commended the enduring partnership between the two nations, emphasizing their shared commitment to upholding democracy and addressing security challenges. “Nigeria is not just a friend to the UK but a strategic partner. Both nations stand together to defend democracy, which we both cherish as a form of government,” he stated.

Director, Defence Information reaffirmed the UK’s readiness to work closely with Nigeria in tackling its security challenges, highlighting the importance of sustained collaboration to enhance peace and stability.
Representing the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, at the event, the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Shayo Olatunde, expressed gratitude for the UK’s unwavering support to Nigeria’s military. He lauded the UK’s contributions to the AFN, including the sponsorship of technical teams, Special Forces training, and the provision of counter-Improvised Explosive Device (IED) mobile equipment.
AVM Olatunde also acknowledged the training of hundreds of Nigerian military personnel in civil-military relations, describing it as a significant boost to the professionalism and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces.
During the meeting, AVM Olatunde called for enhanced collaboration in critical areas such as advanced training and cyber warfare. He stressed the importance of deeper intervention to further strengthen the capacity of Nigeria’s military in addressing emerging threats.
