The Anambra State Police Command has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of one of its officers, Inspector Okolie Amechi, who was fatally shot in what has been described as an accidental discharge involving his 10-year-old son.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the heartbreaking incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, June 15, 2025, in Awka, the state capital. Preliminary investigations suggest that the Inspector’s son, unaware of the condition of the service AK-47 rifle assigned to his father, accidentally pulled the trigger. The bullet struck Inspector Amechi in the back and also injured his second child on the hand.

Inspector Amechi was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but was unfortunately confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. His injured child is currently receiving treatment and is said to be responding well.

The police confirmed that the rifle has been recovered and the body of the deceased has been deposited in the morgue.

“The Command mourns this unfortunate loss and extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Inspector,” SP Ikenga said. “We also wish the second victim a speedy and full recovery.”

The Anambra State Police Command noted that further updates on the incident will be communicated in due course.
