In a functional society, one would expect the government to exhibit empathy in responding to the distress of its citizens.
Regrettably, Nigeria’s government has consistently demonstrated a lamentable lack of concern for the welfare of its people.
The recent collapse of the Onicha-Ugbo/Idumuje Ugboko road for over a year now is a stark illustration of governmental negligence.
*In the face of this egregious failure, government could have taken the following measures:*
1. Extended a visit to the affected community or convened a town hall meeting to apprise the people of the government’s awareness of the deplorable situation and its plans to rectify it.
2. Expressed empathy with the affected populace and provided a clear timeline for the commencement and completion of repair works.
3. Convened a meeting with youth and community leaders to appeal for their cooperation in utilizing alternative access routes.
4. Allocated funds to expand and improve these access routes, ensuring their passability and safety for all users.
5. Procured essential supplies, such as rain boots, to facilitate the movement of people and goods.
6. Offered financial assistance to businesses affected by the road collapse.
7. Deployed ad hoc staff to manage traffic flow and prevent congestion.
8. Engaged vigilante services to ensure the security of the area, particularly at night.
And most importantly maintain the roads after construction so that minor potholes will not escalate.
Regrettably, the government’s response has been woefully inadequate, characterized by the dumping of hardcore stones on the failed road, which has only exacerbated the problem-
This knee-jerk reaction underscores the government’s lack of commitment to addressing the root causes of the issue.
Effective public policy necessitates a holistic approach, encompassing not only the introduction of ameliorative measures but also rigorous monitoring and evaluation to ensure their success.
The Nigerian government’s behavior is unacceptable, and it is imperative that citizens hold their leaders accountable for their actions.
As a concerned citizen, I am appealing to the the government to take immediate and concrete action to address the deplorable state of the Onicha-Ugbo/Idumuje Ugboko road. It is time for the government to prioritize the welfare of its people and demonstrate a genuine commitment to addressing the pressing challenges facing our nation.
Sincerely,
