Human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, has strongly opposed the proposed renaming of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) after former President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a post shared on social media, Sowore condemned the idea, describing it as a dishonor to the legacy of the institution, which he referred to as “great” and “prestigious.”
He expressed confidence that both current students and alumni of the university would rise in opposition to the plan.
“I am vehemently opposed to renaming the great University of Maiduguri in honor of Muhammadu Buhari.
“I trust that the students and alums of the prestigious UNIMAID will reject the decision”, Sowore stated.
Though the proposal has not been officially confirmed by government authorities, reactions have been swift and divided across social media platforms.
While some supporters argue that the renaming would recognize Buhari’s contributions to education and national development, critics insist that such a move is undeserved, citing various controversies during his administration.
UNIMAID, established in 1975, is one of Nigeria’s foremost institutions in the Northeast and has played a vital role in providing education in a region long plagued by insurgency.
Many within the academic community believe the university’s name should remain untouched as a symbol of resilience and academic excellence.
As the debate continues, it remains unclear whether any formal steps have been taken toward renaming the institution.
However, the outcry from Sowore and others has already set the stage for potential student-led resistance and broader public discourse.
