A tense encounter turned fatal on Sunday, 13 October 2025, when a soldier on duty at the Delta Marine Logistics and Technical (DMLT) Estate in Warri, Delta State, shot and killed a suspected criminal in what the Army described as an act of self-defence.

According to a statement issued by the Headquarters, 63 Brigade, Asaba, the incident occurred after a group of individuals attempted to force their way into the estate without undergoing security checks. The soldier, stationed at the gate, reportedly stopped the group for questioning, but they allegedly became aggressive and violent.

The confrontation escalated into a physical struggle, during which the soldier, acting in self-defence, engaged one of the suspects using armed combat techniques, injuring him in the process. The injured suspect was rushed to a nearby hospital but was later confirmed dead.

The Brigade said the Otu-Jeremi Police Division in Delta State was immediately notified for further investigation and appropriate action.

Reiterating its commitment to professionalism and respect for human rights, the 63 Brigade urged residents of Delta State to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security personnel during routine checks.
