The Nigeria Police Force has achieved a major breakthrough in its fight against cybercrime with the conviction of 21 foreign nationals linked to a sophisticated internet fraud syndicate uncovered in Abuja in November 2024.

According to a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the syndicate was exposed following a coordinated raid on November 3, 2024, at a building in Jahi, Abuja. Acting on credible intelligence, operatives arrested 130 suspects including 113 foreign nationals, predominantly of Chinese and Malaysian origin, and 17 Nigerian collaborators. The suspects were implicated in large-scale internet fraud, hacking operations, and other offences threatening Nigeria’s national security and economic stability.

The statement noted that after thorough investigations, the suspects were arraigned in court on December 2, 2024. Following months of trial supported by digital forensic evidence and expert testimonies, 21 defendants were convicted and sentenced by a competent court on August 1, 2025. Prosecution of the remaining suspects is ongoing in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to tackling cybercrime through advanced technology, international partnerships, and diligent investigative processes.

He stressed that the convictions send a clear warning to cybercriminal networks, both local and foreign, that Nigeria will not serve as a safe haven for their activities.

The Police assured the public of continued updates as the remaining cases progress in court.
