In a decisive move against insurgent-linked criminal networks, operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have arrested a suspected informant of a secessionist group accused of spearheading an extortion syndicate in Ihiala Local Government Area.
According to the Command, the suspect, identified as 62-year-old Bernard Odinchefu, was apprehended on October 1, 2025, by the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu.
Preliminary investigations reveal that Odinchefu allegedly supervised the collection of illegal levies from traders in Isseke and Orsumoghu communities, demanding not less than ₦10,000 monthly from each trader. Families conducting burials were also reportedly forced to pay as high as ₦100,000 before ceremonies could hold.
Police sources further disclosed that the proceeds of these extortion activities were allegedly remitted to a terrorist camp through his commander.
Confirming the development, Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reassured residents of the Command’s resolve to dismantle criminal structures tied to insurgent groups.
He stressed that the arrest underscores ongoing efforts to safeguard law-abiding citizens from exploitation under the guise of agitation.
The suspect remains in custody while investigations continue.
