The Ministry of Police Affairs has restated its commitment to driving President Bola Tinubu’s police reform agenda aimed at boosting professionalism, accountability, and effective service delivery within the Nigeria Police Force.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Anuma Ogbonnaya Nlia, gave the assurance when he received a delegation of senior police officers led by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Nemi Edwin at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. The visit centered on deliberations over a proposed new scheme of service for the Force.
Speaking during the engagement, Dr. Anuma emphasized that the Ministry will continue to work hand-in-hand with the Police leadership to implement reforms that would not only enhance operational efficiency and discipline but also improve officers’ welfare, morale, and career progression.
He stressed the importance of policies that guarantee human rights compliance and ensure that the Police is better equipped to serve citizens.
“The Ministry of Police Affairs is fully committed to working with the Nigeria Police Force and other stakeholders by engaging in open dialogue, sharing perspectives, and collectively addressing the challenges and opportunities ahead. Through regular consultations and a unified approach, we can strengthen the Force and enhance its capacity to serve and protect Nigerians,” he stated.
Key issues tabled at the meeting included improved police welfare, pension reform for post-service security, enhanced training and capacity building, modern performance management systems, and a transparent promotion and discipline structure.
Earlier in his remarks, AIG Nemi Edwin commended the Permanent Secretary and his team for their support, noting that the Police cannot successfully implement the proposed new scheme of service without the active involvement of the Ministry of Police Affairs.
He called for stronger collaboration to fine-tune the scheme for the overall benefit of the Force.
The delegation later paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam, for further consultations on the reform agenda.
