The Headquarters of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) has confirmed an ongoing investigation into allegations of assault involving one of its personnel, Private Christopher Emmanuel, and a female food vendor, identified as Doshima, in Kula, Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.

According to preliminary reports, the incident, which took place on May 6 but was officially reported two days later, allegedly began over a disagreement linked to an unpaid debt. It is claimed that during a phone conversation, the soldier accused the vendor of insulting him a dispute that allegedly escalated into a physical altercation.

In response, Private Emmanuel has been taken into custody pending the outcome of a thorough investigation. The Nigerian Army, through OPWS, has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on human rights violations and assured the public that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken should the soldier be found culpable.

“The leadership of the Nigerian Army assures the general public and the victim that justice will be served in line with the military’s high standards,” said Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Abdullahi Lawal Osabo of the 401 Special Forces Brigade, Makurdi.

OPWS also advised members of the public to report any misconduct involving military personnel to the Army’s Human Rights Desk through official channels rather than resorting to social media. “All reports are taken seriously, investigated thoroughly, and sanctions applied where necessary,” the statement added.

The Army thanked the public for its continued cooperation and emphasized its commitment to professionalism, discipline, and justice.
