The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) has recorded a major leadership shift at a critical moment in regional counter-terrorism operations, as Major General Saidu Tanko Audu officially assumed command on Wednesday, 13 November 2025, at the Force Headquarters in N’Djamena, Chad.

Audu’s appointment following his redeployment from the Nigerian Army’s Department of Training comes on the heels of a strategic shake-up within the Armed Forces after the appointment of new Service Chiefs. His arrival is expected to inject fresh momentum into ongoing multinational efforts against Boko Haram and other violent extremist groups across the Lake Chad Basin.

In an emotional farewell, outgoing Commander Major General Godwin Michael Mutkut, OFR, thanked the Executive Secretary of the Lake Chad Basin Commission, AU Mission Support Team, EU partners, and MNJTF personnel for what he described as steadfast cooperation that strengthened the mission’s achievements.

He credited the Force’s successes to professionalism and teamwork, urging troops to extend the same support to his successor as he proceeds to lead the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps.

Delivering his maiden address, Major General Audu expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu (NAM), for the confidence reposed in him. He pledged to build on the operational gains recorded under his predecessor while deepening synergy among all MNJTF components.

Audu charged personnel to remain disciplined, focused, and innovative, stressing that strengthened collaboration with local communities and regional security stakeholders will be vital to securing sustainable peace in the Lake Chad region.

The ceremony featured the signing of handover documents, the symbolic transfer of the command flag, and a group photograph marking the transition.
