The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 49-year-old man, Nnamdi Anyaji, for allegedly killing his 68-year-old mother, Mrs. Dorathy Anyaji, in Amudo Village, Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area.

The disturbing incident occurred on Friday, April 11, 2025, at about 1:40 p.m. and was reported by operatives attached to the Ekwulobia Divisional Police Station.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect attempted to take his own life immediately after committing the act.

Prompt intervention by police operatives led to the arrest of the suspect at the scene. An axe believed to have been used in the murder was recovered during the operation.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the fatal confrontation was triggered by a financial dispute. The suspect had allegedly accused his mother of dishonesty regarding proceeds from their cassava business, which escalated into a violent altercation.

The suspect is currently in police custody under close watch to prevent further attempts at suicide. The police have confirmed that he will be charged to court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, police operatives attached to the Special Anti-Cultism Squad in Enugu-Ukwu carried out a successful early morning raid on a suspected criminal drug camp at Umuokpala Village, Orumba North Local Government Area, also on April 11.

The operation, based on actionable intelligence, led to the arrest of 12 young men who were reportedly involved in the sale and consumption of hard drugs. Items recovered from the camp included a sizable quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, various illicit drugs, and other incriminating materials.

The arrested suspects were identified as:
Ifeanyi Bernard, Emmanuel Ugwu, Thankgod Kelechi, Umeh Chidera, Aguiyi Onyeka, Onyeka Martin, Festus Ihezie, Chibundu Nicholas, Solomon Obiefule, Chibundu Daniel, Neke Shedrack, and Nwazufu Kingsley — all males between the ages of 20 and 29.

Following standard procedure, all suspects and recovered exhibits were handed over to operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.

While reaffirming the Command’s commitment to public safety, SP Tochukwu Ikenga urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement agencies. He further commended the swift actions of officers involved in both operations and assured residents that the Command remains resolute in addressing all forms of crime in Anambra State.

“The safety of lives and property remains our utmost priority. We continue to respond promptly to distress calls and act on credible intelligence to rid our communities of criminal elements,” the PPRO stated.

Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
