The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, has ordered an intensive manhunt for Godwin Vanem, the prime suspect in the gruesome murder of a retired judge, Justice Ifeoma Okogwu, in Asaba.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, following the shocking discovery of the deceased’s body at her residence.
According to SP Bright, “the DPO ‘A’ Division, Asaba, received a distress report on November 24, 2025, from the victim’s brother who discovered her lifeless body in the sitting room with her hands, legs and mouth tied.”
He said detectives immediately visited the scene, evacuated the corpse and deposited it at the mortuary for autopsy.
“One suspect, Lucky Matthew, has been arrested, while the principal suspect, Godwin Vanem, fled the apartment immediately after the crime and is currently on the run,” SP Bright stated.
He added that CP Abaniwonda had directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Homicide Section, for discreet investigation.
Quoting the police boss, SP Bright said: “This wicked act will not go unpunished. We will pursue the fleeing suspect relentlessly and ensure that all those involved face the full weight of the law.”
The CP also condoled with the family of the deceased, assuring them that justice would be served.
