The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to merit, professionalism, and integrity in its promotion process, stressing that every elevation within the Force reflects hard work and dedication, not favouritism or sentiment.
‎
‎Egbetokun stated this on Tuesday, during the decoration ceremony of newly promoted Deputy Inspectors-General, Assistant Inspectors-General, and Commissioners of Police at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
‎
‎In his address titled “Promotion as a Trust of Leadership,” the IGP said the event was not merely about the conferment of new ranks but a celebration of excellence, discipline, and service to the nation.
‎
‎“Today, we celebrate not just advancement in rank, but the affirmation of excellence, character, and distinguished service within the Nigeria Police Force. We mark not just promotion but the reaffirmation of trust, competence, and integrity,” he declared.
‎
‎Egbetokun commended the newly promoted officers for their diligence and loyalty, urging them to see their new ranks as a call to greater responsibility.
‎
‎“Advancement in rank brings with it a new horizon of duty. Every insignia worn at this level must represent not privilege, but purpose — a reminder that authority is meaningful only when it uplifts the institution and strengthens public trust,” the IGP said.
‎
‎He emphasized that leadership in the Force must be anchored on fairness, equity, and justice, values he described as essential for sustaining public confidence and internal discipline.
‎
‎Addressing recent speculations about the credibility of promotion exercises, Egbetokun was unequivocal:
‎
‎ “Recent months have witnessed attempts by certain mischief makers to cast shadows on the credibility of our promotion process. But truth stands taller than rumours. The Nigeria Police Force has nothing to hide and nothing to defend. Every promotion conducted under this administration has followed due process — transparent, merit-based, and in strict conformity with established standards. There is no promotion scandal in the Nigeria Police Force.”
‎
‎He maintained that the current Police leadership remains committed to rewarding competence and professionalism.
‎
‎“Promotions in the Nigeria Police today are guided solely by competence, performance, and discipline. There is no place for favouritism, nepotism, or tribal sentiment,” he stressed.
‎
‎The IGP further charged the officers to embrace community policing and intelligence-led policing, noting that modern security challenges demand innovation, collaboration, and technological adaptation.
‎
‎“The Nigerian people expect a Force that is smarter, more responsive, and deeply connected to the communities it serves,” he said, urging commanders to make their jurisdictions models of discipline, innovation, and public trust.
‎
‎Egbetokun also lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his unwavering support to the Police and commitment to national security reforms, as well as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, DIG Hashimu Argungu (Rtd), and members of the Commission for their sustained cooperation and transparency in the promotion process.
‎
‎ “Our shared commitment to a merit-driven system continues to reinforce the integrity of police administration in our country,” the IGP observed.
‎
‎He commended the families of the newly promoted officers for their sacrifices, describing them as the “silent strength behind every triumph.”
‎
‎ “Your patience, prayers, and stability sustain our officers in service. Policing is not an individual duty but a collective commitment to nation-building,” he said.
‎
‎Concluding his address, the IGP reaffirmed his vision for a modern, accountable, and people-focused Police Force.
‎
‎ “Together, we are building a modern, accountable, and people-focused Police Force — one that earns trust at home and respect abroad. Let your leadership embody this transformation,” he urged.
‎
‎Egbetokun congratulated all newly promoted officers and wished them continued success in their service to the nation.
‎
‎ “May your service bring honour to the Force and progress to our nation. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. God bless the Nigeria Police Force,” he concluded.
