Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strong security measures, expanded healthcare delivery, and performance-driven governance as he marked his first year in office on Friday.
Speaking during a media interface in Benin City, the Governor said his leadership style combines respect with firmness, especially in matters concerning public safety. He noted that nightlife has fully returned to the state capital following decisive actions against criminal gangs that once disrupted peace in the metropolis.
“We warned them. They tested us. We acted decisively,” Okpebholo said, confirming multiple arrests and demolition of hideouts linked to criminal groups. He added that over 300 trained vigilante officers have been deployed across communities, contributing to a steady decline in crime over the last three weeks.
“Edo is not a place for criminals,” he declared, restating his support for the establishment of State Police, which he described as the future of effective security in Nigeria.
On health reforms, the Governor said his administration inherited a “comatose” system but has since renovated more than 80 primary healthcare centres across all 18 local government areas. He confirmed that newly recruited doctors and nurses have been deployed and retained through improved welfare packages.
He also shared a personal testimony from a former deputy governor who expressed gratitude after his mother’s community received its first resident doctor.
Providing updates on infrastructure, Okpebholo highlighted the revival of the state-owned Edo Line, now boasting 50 newly acquired CNG buses in addition to the 100 earlier delivered. He also cited ongoing construction of flyovers at Ramat Park and Adesuwa, as well as expansive road projects along Sapele Road.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the Governor expressed confidence in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the party remains the one to beat.
“We promised 2.5 million votes, and we are not joking,” he said, adding that President Bola Tinubu’s support continues to strengthen the party’s presence across Edo State.
Governor Okpebholo concluded by reiterating his commitment to the people: “Edo people trusted me to deliver. I will not betray that trust.”
