The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has cautioned residents against the sale and use of firecrackers, knockout explosives and other prohibited pyrotechnics as the festive period approaches.
In a statement made available to newsmen, the Spokesperson for the Command, SP Josephine Adeh, said the warning followed increasing circulation of such explosive items across Abuja.
According to her, “firecrackers are dangerous, capable of causing injuries, triggering fire outbreaks and creating panic in communities.” She added that the devices could also “provide cover for criminals to commit offences under the guise of loud explosive sounds.”
Adeh stressed that vulnerable persons—including children, the elderly and those with health challenges—were often the worst hit by loud pyrotechnics.
She said police personnel have been directed to strictly enforce the ban. “We will arrest and prosecute anyone found selling, purchasing or using these prohibited items,” she said.
Residents were urged to report offenders or suspicious activities to the Command’s emergency lines: 08032003913 and 08068587311.
