In response to the recent gruesome killing of ten individuals in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, on Tuesday, July 2, 2025, led a Joint Security Investigative Team to the scene of the incident. The team included personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other sister agencies.

Speaking in a press release made available to journalists, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest of one male suspect, Sunday Mbanu, who is currently assisting the police with the investigation.

CP Orutugu reiterated that the attack was not targeted at any specific group or state indigene but described it as a “cowardly action by the common enemies of the State.”

During interactions with stakeholders in the Ogboji community including the Traditional Prime Minister, the President General, and the son of the landlord where the fatal meeting was held key findings began to emerge. It was revealed that the attack occurred during a meeting of a factional leadership group of Ebonyi State indigenes residing in Ogboji.

The group is reportedly entangled in a leadership tussle, which had earlier prompted a petition to the President General of Ogboji without the involvement of security agencies.

Efforts by the PG to resolve the dispute through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) strategies unfortunately failed, leading to the tragic escalation. The landlord’s son further
confirmed that one of the victims was a tenant in their compound and provided valuable information aiding the ongoing investigation.

The Joint Security Team, while expressing condolences to the people of Ebonyi State and the bereaved families, also visited the Traditional Ruler of Ekwulobia during the mission. They assured the public of their commitment to bringing the perpetrators of the heinous crime to justice and restoring peace in the affected area.
