The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has underscored leadership and continuous training as the foundations of the Nigerian Army’s effectiveness, stating that no military force can overcome evolving security challenges without strengthening these two pillars.
General Shaibu made the declaration on Wednesday during his operational tour of the 1 Division Area of Responsibility in Kaduna his first official visit to the Division since assuming office.
Addressing senior officers after receiving an operational briefing, the Army Chief said leadership remains the most decisive factor in combating insecurity. He emphasised that officers must embody the discipline, courage and integrity expected by the troops they lead, noting that “every officer has a core responsibility to lead from the front.”
He urged them to demonstrate character and competence at all times, stressing that the ability of the Army to safeguard lives and property depends heavily on leadership displayed at every command level.
In a separate address to soldiers on parade, Lieutenant General Shaibu reiterated the importance of loyalty, obedience and trust within the command chain. He charged the troops to remain disciplined and fully committed to their constitutional duties, adding that effective soldiering begins with confidence in one’s commanders.
Highlighting training as the backbone of military professionalism, the COAS described it as the “best gift” the Army provides its personnel. He encouraged troops to take advantage of available courses in Nigerian Army training schools and divisional institutions to enhance their skills, build capacity and improve personal growth.
Reaffirming his commitment to welfare, the Army Chief commissioned a newly built soldiers’ canteen at the Division Headquarters as part of efforts to improve living and working conditions for personnel.
Lt. Gen. Shaibu’s visit forms part of ongoing efforts to assess operational readiness across formations and strengthen the Army’s capacity to respond to contemporary security threats.
