In a bold move to combat radicalisation and promote peacebuilding among Nigerian youth, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has inaugurated two student-led task forces Students Against Violent Extremism (SAVE 1 and SAVE 2) in Maiduguri, Borno State.
According to a statement signed today by the Director, Defense Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the initiative was launched during a high-level multi-sector conference focused on countering extremism, insurgency, and terrorism in the North-East. The one-day forum was organised by the Kaltum Foundation for Peace in collaboration with the Network of Civil Society Organisations and the Borno State Youth Parliament. It drew participation from students, traditional rulers, civil society leaders, and security stakeholders.
Describing the launch as a “profound homecoming,” General Musa reflected on his previous operational leadership in the region, including Operations LAFIYA DOLE and HADIN KAI.
He lauded the resilience of the North-East people and urged students to become frontline agents of peace.
“You are the torchbearers of new values,” he said. “You must choose paths that build rather than break.”
He emphasized the critical role of young people and schools in combating extremist ideologies, calling for responsible social media use, civic vigilance, and peer advocacy as non-violent means to address radicalisation.
“Silence is no longer an option,” General Musa warned. “The evil ignored today may haunt us tomorrow.”
He encouraged SAVE team members to identify and support vulnerable peers while promoting unity, national cohesion, and inclusive narratives.
The CDS also expressed gratitude for the review of his book, “Taking Stand Against Insurgency, Terrorism and Banditry: Admonition to Nigerian Youth,” and welcomed open feedback to refine Nigeria’s counterterrorism strategies.
He highlighted the need for constant review and innovation in response to evolving security threats.
General Musa acknowledged the ongoing support from the Governors of Borno and Yobe States and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for backing the North-East’s recovery under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
In a moment of solidarity, the CDS condemned the recent suicide bombings in the region, describing them as cowardly acts, and offered his sympathies to victims and their families.
The event closed on a hopeful note, with a resounding message: the youth of the North-East are not just tomorrow’s leaders they are today’s force for peace.
