The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has arrested a Togolese driver following a high-speed crash at Adeniji Adele Intersection, inward Ilubirin, Lagos Island, that left a pedestrian critically injured.
‎
‎According to LASTMA, the foreign driver, who was behind the wheels of a Mazda car with registration number EPE 749 GS, lost control of the speeding vehicle and rammed into a pedestrian attempting to cross the road. Witnesses said the victim was flung into the air and landed in a pool of blood.
‎
‎In a dramatic twist, the driver attempted to flee with his vehicle but was swiftly pursued and apprehended by LASTMA operatives, who immediately handed him over to officers at Adeniji Adele Police Division for further investigation and prosecution.
‎
‎Emergency responders from LASAMBUS rushed the victim to the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, where doctors are battling to save his life.
‎
‎General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the reckless act, warning motorists against endangering lives with excessive speed.
‎
‎ “This is another reminder that speed kills. Drivers must know that once a life is lost, it cannot be replaced,” Bakare-Oki stated.
‎
‎He further assured Lagos residents of the Authority’s commitment to ensuring safety on all roads.
‎
‎ “Our operatives will not relent. Anyone who thinks they can get away with lawlessness will meet the full force of the law. LASTMA exists to protect lives, and that is exactly what we did today,” he added.
‎
‎Bakare-Oki also sent his prayers to the injured pedestrian, expressing hope for a swift recovery.
