The Anambra State Police Command has cautioned residents against engaging in caste-based discrimination, describing it as unlawful, barbaric, and a gross violation of fundamental human rights guaranteed under Nigerian law.

Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement on Wednesday, emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution explicitly prohibits any form of discrimination based on community, ethnic group, place of origin, sex, religion, or circumstance of birth. He cited Section 42(1) and Section 34(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which guarantee citizens’ rights to equality, dignity, and freedom from inhuman treatment.

Ikenga also referenced the Discrimination Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2018, which criminalizes all forms of discriminatory practices and prescribes penalties for offenders.

He warned that denying couples the right to marry or live freely together on the basis of caste practices is unlawful.

According to him, once two consenting adults agree to marry, no cultural or traditional barrier has legal authority to override their constitutional rights to freedom of association, family life, and dignity.

“The Command wishes to make it clear that Nigeria is governed by the rule of law and not oppressive traditional practices. Anyone found culpable of enforcing caste-based discrimination will face the full weight of the law,” he stated.

The Police Command further urged residents of Anambra State to uphold peace, equality, and mutual respect while reporting any case of caste-based discrimination to the nearest police station.

“The dignity, freedom, and security of every individual remain a top priority for the Anambra State Police Command,” Ikenga added.
