The Anambra State Police Command has raised alarm over the growing trend of false and exaggerated security information circulating on social media, vowing to expose and prosecute individuals responsible for spreading such panic-inducing content.
In an official statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command expressed concern that certain individuals and groups have been deliberately sharing unverified or misleading reports of insecurity in the state. According to the Command, these actions appear targeted at discrediting the efforts of security agencies and undermining public confidence.
“These acts are not only malicious but also undermine ongoing security operations and erode public trust in law enforcement,” the statement read.
To counter this disturbing trend, the Command has announced plans to identify and expose the sources of such disinformation. Offenders will face thorough investigations and possible prosecution under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, alongside other relevant laws.
“The Police will no longer tolerate deliberate misinformation designed to cause fear or tarnish the image of security operatives,” Ikenga warned. “Legal actions will be pursued where necessary to ensure accountability.”
Residents of Anambra State have been urged to refrain from spreading unverified security updates and instead report suspicious activity through the Command’s official communication channels.
Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the Command assured citizens of continued professionalism and transparency in its operations.
