The Anambra State Police Command has announced the successful rearrest of Ikemefuna Ossai, a key suspect in the kidnapping and brutal murder of the late Hon. Justice Azuka, the esteemed Member representing Onitsha 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly.
Confirming the development, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, stated that the arrest was the result of a meticulous, intelligence-led operation. Ossai, who had earlier escaped from custody, was tracked across several Nigerian states and even into a neighbouring West African country. He was finally apprehended on May 7, 2025, in Asaba, Delta State. According to the Police, the suspect attempted to flee on sighting officers but was quickly subdued. He sustained a gunshot wound to the leg during the operation.
In a show of accountability, the Commissioner of Police briefed the family of the late lawmaker and the leadership of the Anambra State House of Assembly, expressing deep regret over the lapses that led to the suspectās initial escape.
Authorities revealed that valuable intelligence obtained from Ossai is aiding ongoing investigations and operations. The Command has since intensified efforts to apprehend other fugitives connected to the crime and to dismantle the wider criminal network involved.
