In a bid to strengthen grassroots security and enhance professionalism among local security actors, the Anambra State Police Command has commenced a statewide training and orientation programme for vigilante operatives, with a central focus on human rights education and security protocol.

The initiative, which aligns with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun is part of ongoing efforts to deepen community policing, encourage inter-agency collaboration, and instill discipline in non-state security outfits working in support of formal law enforcement.

According to the Command, the programme features a diverse panel of facilitators, including senior police officers, representatives of sister security agencies, civil society actors, and human rights organizations. The training modules cover critical areas such as intelligence gathering, ethical conduct, lawful engagement, and respect for the rights of citizens.

Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, noted that the programme is a strategic response to the growing need for professionalism among vigilante groups who serve as a vital link in community safety architecture.

He emphasized that all operatives are expected to operate within the bounds of the law and under close coordination with Divisional Police Officers and Area Commanders.

“The goal is to institutionalize best practices and reinforce discipline among grassroots security personnel. Vigilante operatives must work hand-in-hand with the police and uphold the rights of citizens in every engagement,” CP Orutugu stated.

The Command also urged all community-based vigilante groups across Anambra to cooperate fully with supervising authorities to ensure effective monitoring and implementation of the training.

Reaffirming its commitment to citizen safety, the Police Command assured the public of its continued dedication to fostering a peaceful and secure environment through community collaboration and sustained capacity building.
