A fire outbreak on Tuesday rocked Afriland Towers, the Broad Street headquarters of Afriland Properties Plc in Lagos Island, sparking panic among workers and residents.
According to the company’s Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications, Chukwunonso Okafor, the blaze was first noticed in the inverter room before smoke spread rapidly through the building, including emergency exits, even as standard evacuation protocols were underway.
Okafor disclosed that emergency response was swift as operatives of the Federal Fire Service, the Lagos State Fire Service, and other agencies rushed to the scene to contain the inferno and coordinate rescue operations, adding that their intervention was said to have helped limit the damage.
However, he expressed sadness over the incident. “We are deeply saddened by this incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies to their families and loved ones,” the company said.
The firm added that it is already working with relevant authorities to investigate the cause of the fire. “Afriland Properties Plc sincerely appreciates the heroic efforts of the emergency responders, first aid workers, and members of the public who assisted with the incident today,” Okafor noted.
While the extent of damage could not be immediately ascertained, the company assured it would provide timely updates as verified information becomes available.
