Defence Minister, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has reaffirmed that air power remains the backbone of Nigeria’s military successes, declaring that it is “central to ongoing security gains across multiple theatres of operation.”
He spoke on Thursday at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Headquarters, Abuja, where newly promoted senior officers were decorated with their new ranks of Air Commodore and Air Vice Marshal.
The Minister said the promotions reflect the nation’s trust in the officers’ competence, strategic judgement and leadership capacity at a critical moment for national security.
According to him, the elevation of the officers aligns with the expectations of the Renewed Hope Agenda and the government’s commitment to strengthening national defence architecture.
General Musa emphasised that attaining the rank of Air Vice Marshal demands broader strategic vision, heightened discipline and a deeper commitment to excellence.
He described the senior officers as custodians of the traditions and core values of the Nigerian Air Force, noting that their decisions will shape both air operations and the next generation of military leadership.
“The expectations placed on you are high because your elevated position requires clear vision, steady judgement and an enduring sense of purpose,” he said.
General Musa also highlighted the decisive contributions of air power to ongoing joint operations, praising NAF for precision engagements, tactical mobility and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions.
He reaffirmed that inter-Service cooperation remains indispensable. “Air operations achieve their full potential only when seamlessly integrated with the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy and all security agencies,” he noted.
The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, congratulated the newly promoted officers and said rank is earned through competence and character.
He stressed that the promotions come at a time when Nigeria faces evolving threats, including terrorism, insurgency, banditry and cyber-related risks.
Both the Minister and the CAS paid tribute to fallen heroes and saluted personnel who continue to bear the scars of service.
The Minister acknowledged the families of the newly promoted officers for their resilience, noting that the Ministry of Defence will continue to strengthen capacity building and institutional oversight.
Speaking on behalf of NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, said the ceremony demonstrates the Service’s enduring commitment to excellence. “These promotions carry profound responsibility. Our officers understand the weight of the trust the nation has placed on them,” he said.
The Minister urged the officers to serve with humility and clarity of purpose while commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his sustained support to the Armed Forces.
