In a decisive operation against illicit drug trafficking, troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS) have intercepted a vehicle loaded with substances suspected to be hard drugs during a routine stop-and-search exercise in Akwanga, Nasarawa State.

The interception took place on Tuesday, 14 October 2025, around Anguwan Malama in Akwanga Local Government Area.

According to military sources, the driver of the ash-coloured Toyota Solara (registration number KJA-108FY, Lagos) abandoned the vehicle and fled into nearby bushes upon sighting the troops. Despite an immediate chase, the suspect managed to escape.

A thorough search of the vehicle revealed several bags of substances suspected to be marijuana, which have since been taken into military custody. The vehicle and exhibits are currently undergoing investigation and will be handed over to relevant authorities for further action.

Commending the troops for their professionalism and vigilance, the Force Commander, Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE, Major General Moses Gara, praised the team’s swift response and operational discipline, noting that their actions underscore the military’s resolve to disrupt criminal activities in the region. “Operation WHIRL STROKE remains committed to denying criminal elements freedom of action and strengthening inter-agency collaboration to enhance safety and stability across Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba States,” Major General Gara affirmed.

The operation marks another successful step in the ongoing efforts of the Nigerian military to combat the menace of drug trafficking and maintain peace within the North Central region.
