The Nigeria Police Force has entered a transformative era of professionalism, accountability, and strength as the National Assembly passed two historic legislations the Police Institutes Establishment Bill and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
These landmark Acts mark a turning point in Nigeria’s policing history, laying the foundation for a modern, well-equipped, and people-centered police institution capable of meeting the complex security challenges of today’s society.
The Police Institutes Establishment Act consolidates and modernizes police training and research institutions nationwide, expanding academic capacity and aligning training curricula with international best practices in leadership, investigation, technology, and community policing. This ensures that Nigerian officers are better prepared for the demands of modern law enforcement.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Amendment) Act strengthens the Force’s financial and administrative base by ensuring transparent and sustainable funding for operations, logistics, equipment, training, and welfare critical elements in achieving peak operational efficiency.
Together, the Acts close long-standing gaps in training, infrastructure, and funding that have hindered effective policing. They empower the Force to upgrade facilities, adopt cutting-edge technologies, and establish global exchange programmes that will redefine the standards of police professionalism in Nigeria.
The reforms also prioritize officer welfare, with provisions for improved service conditions, enhanced health and insurance benefits, and career development opportunities all geared toward motivating officers and promoting ethical service delivery.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, lauded the National Assembly’s commitment and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for assenting to the Bills. He described the move as a bold testament to the administration’s resolve to modernize and professionalize the Nigeria Police Force.
“With this renewed legal and institutional framework, the Force will redouble efforts to elevate training standards, nurture world-class officers, and deliver efficient, accountable, and citizen-focused policing services nationwide,” the IGP affirmed.
This milestone, he noted, signifies not just progress for the Nigeria Police Force but a victory for national security, professionalism, and public trust
