The Kebbi State Police Command has dismissed as false a statement credited to the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Kebbi Branch, alleging that nine local government areas in the state were “ungovernable” and calling for a boycott of courts.
In a strongly worded reaction on Monday, the Command described the claim as “grossly misleading” and urged calm among residents, warning that such unfounded statements could incite fear and undermine public confidence.
Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, in a statement issued on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Bello M. Sani, clarified that no part of Kebbi State has become ungovernable or inaccessible to security or judicial authorities.
Abubakar explained that the abduction of Barrister Isiaku Danjuma, cited in the NBA’s statement, did not occur in Kebbi State but in Ibeto, Niger State, outside the Command’s jurisdiction.
“The victim, a legal practitioner based in Kebbi but an indigene of Ibeto, Niger State, travelled from Niger to Abuja and only joined a bus provided by the Kebbi State Government for attendees of the investiture of Barrister Hudu Lawan, SAN. On the return trip, he alighted at Kontagora and proceeded to Ibeto, where he was unfortunately abducted,” the statement read.
The Command condemned what it termed “blanket and far-reaching” assertions issued without consultation with security agencies, warning that such remarks “serve only to create unnecessary fear, embolden criminal elements, and undermine ongoing operations.”
CP Bello reassured residents that Kebbi State remains safe and secure, urging citizens to go about their lawful activities without fear.
“We remain fully committed to protecting lives and property, maintaining public peace, and ensuring that criminals—wherever they operate—are arrested and prosecuted,” he said.
The Command called on professional associations, community leaders, and stakeholders to engage constructively with security agencies and support efforts to combat crime.
It also appealed to the abductors of Barrister Danjuma to release him immediately and unconditionally.
