Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has paid a heartfelt condolence visit to the family of the late former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Solomon Egiator Arase (Rtd.), describing him as not just a national icon but also a pivotal figure in his political journey.
The late IGP, who passed on at the age of 69, is being remembered for his transformative contributions to policing in Nigeria and his quiet but powerful mentorship in politics.
Reflecting on their relationship, Governor Okpebholo said:
“When I first decided to pursue the governorship of Edo State, the very first person I went to see was Arase. I came to his house late at night with General Cecil Isekhaigbe, and we talked. He listened to me patiently. At the end of the conversation, he told me he would support my ambition.”
The Governor added:
“To show his support, he said he would take me to meet the Oba of Benin the following weekend. That was the first time I met the Oba, and thanks to him. That meeting was a significant stepping stone in my success. How could I ever forget such a man?”
Governor Okpebholo expressed deep sadness at Arase’s passing, calling it “too early in his prime” but noted, “Your husband lived well.” He further assured the family that the Edo State Government will play a role in the burial arrangements as a mark of honour.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Junior Arase, the late IGP’s first son, thanked the Governor for his visit and comforting words.
Also paying tribute, Commissioner-designate Kassim Afebua hailed Arase’s innovative reforms in the Nigeria Police, including his push for community policing and dismantling of roadblocks, which redefined national security operations.
Governor Okpebholo also attended the 10-year remembrance of Mrs. Imuegbeyogho Odubu (née Osunde), where he was joined by Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa and other dignitaries.
