A dramatic scene unfolded on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway inward Ifako on Sunday when operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) intercepted a reckless Nissan Jeep driver who attempted to flee after knocking down a pedestrian.

The driver, whose vehicle bore registration number KJA 354 ET, reportedly tried to outpace a 40-foot container truck at high speed shortly after descending the Ogudu flyover. In the dangerous maneuver, the driver lost control, struck an unsuspecting pedestrian, and rammed into the expressway median.

Instead of helping the injured victim, witnesses said the motorist attempted a brazen escape. But LASTMA officers on ground swiftly gave chase, blocked his exit, and handed him over to Ogudu Police Division. The pedestrian, critically injured, was rushed to the hospital by rescue teams.

The mangled Jeep was also towed to the Ogudu Police Division for further investigation.

Despite the accident occurring near the ongoing rehabilitation works at the Ogudu–Ifako bridge intersections, LASTMA personnel worked tirelessly to clear the wreckage and maintain traffic flow, preventing a gridlock.

Speaking on the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, praised his officers for their professionalism and swift response.

He warned motorists against speeding and reckless overtaking, stressing that such behavior endangers not only drivers but also pedestrians and other road users.

“Excessive speeding and dangerous maneuvers cost lives. Motorists must exercise patience and ensure proper clearance before overtaking,” Bakare-Oki cautioned.

He reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to protecting lives, enforcing traffic discipline, and keeping Lagos roads safe.
