After nearly 50 days in detention at the Force Investigation Department (FCID) of the Nigeria Police Force, TikTok user Timothy Gabriel, known as @official_tumma, has been released on bail. His detention, allegedly at the request of Senator Remi Tinubu, wife of President Bola Tinubu, sparked outrage and advocacy efforts from activist.

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, who has been vocal about the case, revealed the details of Gabriel’s detention and release.

He recounted how authorities repeatedly blocked attempts to visit the detainee, despite adherence to official protocols.

“Four days ago, an attempt to visit Timothy Gabriel at FCID was blocked. Despite fulfilling all visitation protocols alongside his mother and relatives, we were met with hostility as police at the detention center grew agitated and denied us entry,” Sowore stated.

He further condemned the Nigerian police for failing to present Gabriel in court, exposing what he described as “corrupt and inhumane attitudes” among officers. “They know I won’t tolerate the extortion, torture, or mistreatment of Nigerian citizens, including themselves,” Sowore added.

Following sustained pressure, Gabriel was released on bail three days ago, marking what Sowore called a victory for justice.
“Thankfully, our efforts paid off. The fight continues!” he declared.

The case has fueled renewed calls for police accountability.
