Nigeria Immigration headquarters has ordered investigation into alleged brutality of a journalist and staff of Oyo Traffic Agency.
Spokesman of the service, Kenneth Udo, a Deputy Comptroller of Immigration, noted that the CGI was disturbed by a news report circulating, alleging that some Immigration officers assaulted personnel of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Agency (OYSRTMA), and one Seun Falomo, a journalist with Galaxy Television, the Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap, has swung into action to uncover the facts behind the fracas.
“An incidence report promptly forwarded from Zone F Headquarters of NIS in Ibadan, Oyo State, where the incident occurred, indicated that personnel of Oyo State Road Traffic Management Agency (OYSRTMA) allegedly caught a retired Assistant Comptroller of Immigration (ACI), violating traffic rules at Onipepeye area (Old Ife road), and tried arresting him, but the latter who wanted to explain himself, was assaulted, leading to his son (who was driving his car) sustaining a fractured leg.
“Regrettably, the situation further escalated when Immigration officers at Zone F office tried to intervene.
Beyond the variations in reports, what is certain is that an ugly incident has occurred, and CGI Nandap is deeply concerned and takes exception to a situation where a personnel of OYSRTMA, a journalist and those of the NIS who ought to be partners in progress, would be caught up in a contradiction which resulted in injury and violations of the law. “She has, therefore, ordered a thorough investigation into the incident, stressing that the Service will not hesitate to sanction any of its Officers and Men who flaunt the law and code of conduct.
“CGI Nandap appeals for the understanding of the public and also seeks sustained collaboration with other sister agencies of government at all levels. She as well, reaffirms her commitment to upholding professionalism and integrity in delivering on NIS’ core mandates of border security and migration management, amongst othe
