The Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday, May 22, 2023, secured the conviction and sentencing of one David Asigbe Iremekhi before Justice Umaru Fadawu of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri to one-year imprisonment.

The defendant was jailed on a one-count charge of cheating following investigation arising from a petition written by Jerry Shugaba alleging Iremekhi reneged to pay him crued profits after he convinced him to finance a purchase order awarded to Sky Global Concept Limited by Terre Des Hommes.

The one-count read: “That you, David Asigbe Iremekhi whilst being Chief Executive Officer of Sky Source Global Concept Limited, a company registered in Nigeria sometime in March 2021, at Maiduguri, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, dishonestly induced one Jerry Shugaba to deliver to you the sum of N16,500,000.00 (Sixteen Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira) only with an agreement to pay him accrued profit which you are yet to pay and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 320 (a) and punishable under section 322 of the Penal Code Cap 102 Laws of Borno State.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty when he was first arraigned on March 8, 2023.

At the resumed hearing of the case, Iremekhi pleaded with the court to change his plea and pleaded guilty to the charge.

Counsel for the prosecution M. Faruk prayed the court to convict the defendant as charged.

Justice Fadawu thereafter convicted and sentenced him to one-year imprisonment with an option of Two Hundred Thousand Naira fine.

The Judge further ordered the convict to pay Shugaba the balance of N8,950,000.00 (Eight Million, Nine Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) or go to jail for five years.
