The Anambra State Police Command has debunked social media claims that the fire incident recorded in Ekwusigo Local Government Area was caused by an armed group, stating that the tragedy resulted from a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a fuel tanker and other vehicles.
A statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, said the incident occurred in the early hours of 21 November 2025, when a tanker laden with PMS collided with a Toyota Corolla, leading to an explosion that consumed both vehicles and some nearby shops.
A tricycle within the area of impact was also engulfed in the fire, resulting in the death of its rider.
The Command said investigations are ongoing to identify the drivers involved and take other necessary actions. It condemned attempts by individuals and groups to circulate false claims suggesting an armed attack, warning that such misinformation is capable of creating fear and tension in the state.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc, mnips, PhD, has ordered a probe to identify the social media handler responsible for spreading the misleading report.
The Command reassured residents of its commitment to accurate information dissemination and maintaining public safety across Anambra State.
