Security analyst and public affairs commentator, Mr. Lucky Ehiwuogwu Monye, has called on the Federal Government to urgently overhaul the nation’s security framework following the alarming rise in kidnappings.
Monye, who spoke to reporters by telephone, said the latest incidents in Kebbi and Kwara States “are a clear demonstration that Nigeria’s current security architecture can no longer cope with the realities on ground.”
According to him, “The frequency of these abductions, their sheer scale, and the boldness of the perpetrators point to deep-rooted challenges within our national security system.”
He argued that although no nation is free from insecurity, Nigeria’s situation requires immediate attention. “With advancements in ICT, insecurity has become more dynamic,” he said. “But what we are witnessing goes beyond global trends. It signals gaps in intelligence handling, inter-agency coordination, and personnel motivation.”
Monye outlined the major areas requiring attention:“We need to address the quality of training, the resources available to our security agencies, the level of motivation of officers and men, the frequency of inter-agency collaboration, and how intelligence is utilized.”
He added: “Nigeria is under-policed, no doubt. But the recent breaches indicate that manpower shortage is not the only issue. There are structural and operational weaknesses that must be fixed.”
Calling for bold steps, he concluded: “We have capable professionals across our security agencies. What is needed is a comprehensive review that restores trust and strengthens the entire security architecture.”
