Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has defended Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar’s trip to the 2025 Dubai International Airshow, saying the visit has the full approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and is crucial to Nigeria’s defence engagements.
Public concern had followed the simultaneous absence of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Defence Staff, General O.O. Oluyede; and Minister Badaru, at a time of rising security anxieties. But Matawalle insisted the concerns were misplaced.
According to him, the Dubai Airshow is a heavyweight global defence platform where nations negotiate partnerships, showcase innovation, and explore technological upgrades — all of which Nigeria cannot afford to ignore.
“Minister Badaru’s official engagement abroad does not diminish our sensitivity to the security situation at home,” he said. “Our combined efforts are ongoing, and our security agencies are fully activated.”
Speaking on the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi, Matawalle said he had immediately condemned the incident and directed security operatives to intensify coordinated action for their rescue. “We are in constant communication with relevant authorities to ensure their safe return,” he added.
He maintained that he is currently overseeing operations at the Ministry of Defence while Badaru attends to international responsibilities.
Matawalle highlighted the advantage of having two ministers in key ministries, saying it prevents any vacuum. He assured Nigerians that Badaru will join ongoing interventions as soon as he returns.
