Enugu State Governor, Barr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has applauded the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, for what he described as the Nigerian Army’s renewed commitment to peace, discipline and operational effectiveness across the country.
Governor Mbah gave the commendation on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the COAS and senior officers from Army Headquarters at Government House, Enugu.
The governor said he had been monitoring the COAS’ activities since his appointment and was impressed by the pace and seriousness with which he had approached his duties.
“I wish to congratulate you on your appointment, which did not come as a surprise considering your antecedents in the North East and other formations,” Mbah said.
He added that Enugu State was honoured to host General Shaibu and the visiting delegation for the ongoing Regimental Sergeant Majors’ Convention.
Responding, General Shaibu thanked the governor and the people of Enugu for what he described as sustained support to the Nigerian Army and other security agencies operating in the state.
“The Nigerian Army will remain proactive in addressing security challenges. With continued collaboration among the Armed Forces, other security agencies and the public, insecurity will gradually be brought under control,”he assured.
The COAS later visited troops of the 82 Division at the Division Headquarters and the Forward Operations Base in Ivo, Abia State. He praised the troops for their resilience and contributions to improved security across the South East, promising that welfare and living conditions in barracks would remain a priority.
He also pledged to address persistent accommodation challenges in army formations nationwide.
General Shaibu thereafter attended the closing ceremony of the 2nd Regimental Sergeant Majors’ Convention, themed “RSM Roles in Operational Readiness and Combat Effectiveness.” As Special Guest of Honour, he described the event as significant, noting that it marked his first official engagement since assuming office.
He said the gathering had provided an opportunity for meaningful deliberation and the exchange of ideas to strengthen discipline, leadership and regimentation across the Army.
Earlier in his remarks, the Chief of Administration (Army), Maj. Gen. Isa Abdullahi, commended the RSMs for their commitment to upholding discipline, saying the convention had broadened their understanding of regimental responsibilities and enhanced their leadership competence.
Certificates were presented to participants drawn from military and paramilitary agencies at the end of the programme.
