The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested several individuals across polling units in Anambra State for allegedly engaging in vote buying during the ongoing governorship election.

The suspects, apprehended in different locations across the state, were caught either offering cash inducements to voters or collecting money in exchange for votes.

An EFCC source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Commission would prosecute the suspects immediately after the election, in line with its mandate to tackle financial crimes and electoral corruption.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the other hand clarified that the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended) criminalises vote buying and selling under Sections 121 and 127.

Section 121 provides that anyone who directly or indirectly offers, gives, or accepts money or any other form of inducement in exchange for votes commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of up to ₦500,000 or 12 months’ imprisonment, or both.

Also, Section 127 also makes it an offence for any person to receive money or other benefits to vote for or refrain from voting for a particular candidate.

The commission said they are working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure that those found guilty face the full weight of the law.
