In a decisive move to ensure peace and order during the forthcoming Anambra Governorship Election, the State Police Command has announced a total restriction of vehicular movement across the state and its boundaries on Saturday, November 8, 2025.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the restriction will be enforced from 12:00am to 6:00pm on Election Day. The measure, he explained, was part of a joint security resolution reached during a high-level meeting of all heads of security agencies in the state, held at the Police State Headquarters, Awka, on November 5, 2025.
SP Tochukwu noted that the move became necessary to forestall the movement of political thugs and criminal elements who may attempt to disrupt the peaceful conduct of the polls. He emphasized that the restriction would affect all roads within Anambra, including major interstate highways linking neighboring states.
“The decision is aimed at preventing the infiltration and movement of political thugs and other criminally-minded persons who may want to compromise the electoral process. We appeal to residents to comply as this is in their collective interest,” the statement read.
The restriction covers all categories of motorized transport, including private and commercial vehicles, trucks, tricycles, motorcycles, and shuttle buses. Travelers who intend to pass through Anambra are advised to use alternative routes throughout the election period.
However, the Command clarified that persons on essential duties — such as accredited INEC officials, election observers, journalists, medical personnel, emergency responders, and other essential service providers — would be exempted, provided they carry valid identification and clearance tags.
The Police Command further appealed to residents to cooperate fully with security operatives who will be stationed at strategic points across the state to enforce compliance and maintain law and order.
“We urge all eligible voters to go out and cast their votes without fear or intimidation. The Police and sister agencies are fully prepared to ensure that the election is peaceful, free, fair, and credible,” Tochukwu added.
He reiterated the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property before, during, and after the election, assuring the public of a robust security presence across all local government areas.
Residents have been enjoined to promptly report any suspicious movement or activity to the nearest security post or through the Command’s emergency hotlines.
The Police spokesman concluded by emphasizing that obedience to the restriction order would help guarantee a hitch-free electoral process and strengthen public confidence in the security architecture of the state.
