The Defence Headquarters in Abuja was filled with emotion and reflection on Thursday as the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabez Musa, DSS, fdc, psc, formally handed over the mantle of leadership, marking the end of a remarkable tenure defined by courage, collaboration, and commitment to national security.

In his valedictory address, General Musa expressed deep gratitude to Almighty God and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the trust and opportunity to serve as Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff. Describing his stewardship as both “challenging and rewarding,” he reflected on the shared vision that guided the Armed Forces toward a safer and more secure nation.

> “We faced a complex and dynamic security landscape, but we confronted it with unwavering resolve—guided by our constitutional mandate and a shared vision for a safe, secure, and prosperous Nigeria,” he stated.

The retired CDS highlighted his administration’s emphasis on jointness, interoperability, and inter-agency cooperation, which, he said, became the pillars of operational success across Nigeria’s multiple security theatres. He noted that under his leadership, the Army, Navy, and Air Force worked more cohesively through the creation of joint task forces—an approach that significantly boosted intelligence sharing, improved efficiency, and enhanced collaboration with sister security agencies.

General Musa commended the bravery and resilience of Nigerian troops in confronting terrorism, insurgency, and other forms of criminality, stating that their sacrifices rekindled hope across liberated communities. He also underscored the priority given to the welfare of personnel, saying, “We pursued policies and projects that improved living and working conditions because we know that a motivated force is a victorious force.”

Paying glowing tribute to fallen heroes and wounded soldiers, the outgoing Defence Chief hailed their sacrifice as the enduring price of national freedom. He equally extended appreciation to journalists for their patriotic reportage, which he said helped counter misinformation and sustain national morale.

He also thanked the National Assembly, the National Security Adviser, the Ministry of Defence, as well as traditional and religious leaders for their support throughout his tenure.

Turning to his successor, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, General Musa expressed confidence in his ability to sustain and surpass existing gains.

“You are a distinguished officer, a seasoned commander, and a patriot of impeccable character. I have absolute confidence in your ability to lead our Armed Forces to greater heights,” he said, urging all personnel to rally behind the new CDS.

As he bowed out of service, General Musa said he leaves fulfilled and optimistic about Nigeria’s future, vowing to continue contributing to national development even in retirement.

> “The journey continues. The mission endures. The duty never ends,” he concluded, to a rousing applause from officers, dignitaries, and guests.
