The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has applauded the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, the Police Management Team, and the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), for the professional and constitutional management of the recent “Free Nnamdi Kanu” protest led by activist Omoyele Sowore in Abuja.
In a statement issued by its National Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Olaniyan, on Tuesday, the PCRC described the handling of the protest as a reflection of the Nigeria Police Force’s renewed commitment to professionalism, human rights, and the rule of law.
Olaniyan noted that the conduct of officers during the demonstration showcased a new era of responsible policing under the leadership of IGP Egbetokun, emphasizing that the Force’s measured response ensured law and order without escalation.
“The prompt and constitutional arraignment of arrested persons within 24 hours is commendable. It demonstrates the Police’s dedication to due process and respect for the rights of citizens,” the statement said.
The PCRC also urged the Force to ensure diligent prosecution of the suspects to deter others who may attempt to breach public peace or destabilize the country.
Furthermore, the Committee commended members of the Eastern community for their composure and understanding during the protest, stressing that the Nnamdi Kanu issue should be resolved through lawful, political, or judicial processes—not confrontation or violence.
“The maturity and restraint shown by the Eastern community is commendable and speaks to the need for peace and dialogue in addressing national issues,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its continuous support for the Nigeria Police Force, the PCRC pledged to strengthen police–community partnerships aimed at promoting peace, security, and public confidence nationwide.
Alhaji Olaniyan also called on citizens to continue to channel their grievances through lawful and peaceful means, noting that cooperation with security agencies remains critical to sustaining national stability.
“The PCRC stands firmly behind the Nigeria Police Force in its mission to maintain law, order, and the safety of all Nigerians,” the statement concluded.
