The Nigerian Army has confirmed that troops under Operation WHIRL STROKE have intervened to stop a violent communal clash between Ugambe and Mbaiase communities in Benue State.
In a statement, Lt Ahmad Zubairu, Acting Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, said the troops responded swiftly on 8 October 2025 after receiving reports of renewed hostilities between the two neighbouring communities.
“Upon arrival, the troops came under sporadic gunfire from armed elements dressed in black. They swiftly responded with superior firepower, forcing the attackers to flee into nearby bushes,” Zubairu stated.
He added that troops recovered one magazine, several rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, empty shells, and various charms believed to have been used by the assailants.
Unfortunately, three civilians lost their lives and one sustained injuries before the arrival of the troops. The wounded victim is receiving treatment at General Hospital, Aliade, while the deceased have been deposited at the mortuary.
Maj-Gen Moses Gara, Force Commander of Operation WHIRL STROKE, praised the troops for their professionalism and quick response, urging them to sustain aggressive patrols to forestall a recurrence.
He appealed to both communities to embrace dialogue for lasting peace.
