A British Airways flight en route from London to Abuja was forced to make an emergency landing in Barcelona after a retired Nigerian Air Vice Marshal (AVM) reportedly passed away midair.
According to reports, the military officer whose name was not immediately released fell critically ill while the aircraft was in flight. The cabin crew made frantic efforts to save his life, administering emergency care before the pilot diverted to El Prat Airport, Barcelona, for medical assistance.
Unfortunately, the officer could not be revived. Sources revealed that he was terminally ill and was being flown back to Nigeria for further medical care when the tragic incident occurred.
The flight, which departed London’s Heathrow Airport at 11 p.m. on Sunday, October 5, was initially scheduled to land in Abuja at 5 a.m. on Monday but was rerouted following the emergency.
In a statement, British Airways confirmed the incident and extended its condolences, describing the situation as “deeply unfortunate.”
The airline also apologised to passengers affected by the delay and announced that a replacement aircraft would depart Barcelona at 2:50 p.m. local time, with arrival in Abuja expected at 5:45 p.m. local time.
“We understand the inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience and understanding,” the airline said in a message to passengers. “Our Customer Care team is available to assist with any questions or concerns.”
The airline further assured passengers that updates would be communicated via email and its Live Chat platform.
Despite the disruption, many have praised the professionalism of the BA crew in handling the in-flight emergency and supporting traumatised passengers during the incident.
