Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Border Patrol Unit have intercepted over one hundred jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, in a series of operations that foiled attempted smuggling across Nigeria’s borders into Niger Republic.
The interceptions, according to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, were made during coordinated stop-and-search operations along key border routes in Sokoto and Katsina States.
While on patrol along the Illela–Sokoto Highway, operatives intercepted a vehicle loaded with eighty jerrycans of PMS and arrested the driver, Yasir Adamu. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was attempting to smuggle the fuel into Niger Republic.
In a related development, another team of officers in Katsina State recovered thirty-five jerrycans, each containing twenty-five litres of petrol, which were also being prepared for illegal export across the border. The suspects, on sighting the police operatives, abandoned the products and fled the scene.
Police authorities confirmed that efforts are underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, commended the operatives for their vigilance and professionalism, noting that the success underscores the renewed commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to protect the nation’s economic interests.
“The Force will continue to sustain robust operations against all forms of economic crimes and smuggling activities undermining Nigeria’s economy,” the IGP said.
