The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has declared an unrelenting manhunt for the gunmen who brutally murdered Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya in Nsukka LGA, describing the act as “wicked, sacrilegious and intolerable.”
Rev. Fr. Eya was gunned down on the night of September 19th, 2025, along Eha-Ndiagu Eha-Etiti Road, Eha-Alumona community. The shocking incident has sparked outrage across the state, with security operatives now under pressure to bring the killers to book.
In a decisive move, CP Giwa ordered the Udenu Area Commander and tactical squads to “fish out the fleeing assailants without delay.” Acting on the directive, police operatives stormed criminal hideouts, raiding black spots and combing bushes across the axis.
“So far, 38 suspects have been arrested and incriminating exhibits recovered. They are currently undergoing screening,” Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed in a statement.
The Commissioner of Police, while consoling the bereaved family and the Catholic Church, assured that the Command will stop at nothing to deliver justice.
“The Command will leave no stone unturned in tracking down those responsible for this heinous act. We will not rest until they are apprehended and made to face the full weight of the law,” CP Giwa vowed.
The murder of Fr. Eya has once again brought to the fore the growing concerns over violent crimes in Enugu communities, as residents now look to the police for swift justice.
